On 21st February the 4th Royal Fusiliers battalion of 9 Brigade, 3rd Division left the Cavalry Barracks in Ypres and moved into the front line in a new set of trenches to the south of Ypres where they stayed, in very wet conditions for two days and nights. The battalion diary reports that there were many dead bodies lying around and that they buried dozens of them and that enemy fire resulted in a number of casualties on the first night and throughout the next day. On 23rd February, they were relieved but not before there were more casualties for the battalion. William Bellamy died from wounds on 24th February but the exact date on which he was wounded is not known. |
